High Heels or Flats? Making the Best Decision for You
Do you believe that "real" women only wear heels? Do you believe there is a place for flats in the workplace? There are a lot of opinions floating around about whether women should be wearing flats or heels, but this shouldn't be a black and white issue. "Real" women should have a variety of shoes in their closet, ranging from the sexiest heels to those ugly yet functional shoes worn out for a nice jog.
If you are on edge wondering whether your flats are inappropriate or your heels too spiked, the following guidelines should help you make fashion decisions with a bit more confidence.
What Will You be Walking On?
Determining whether you should wear heels or flats should depend on the occasion. You should have a variety of footwear in the closet so that you always have something appropriate to your daily mission. The first thing you have to think about is what you will be walking on. Will you be roaming down gravel roads or just working in your office all day? Will you be racing through downtown traffic and rushing to catch a flight or will your day consist of more leisurely shopping?
Think about the type of surfaces you will be walking on and then determine whether heels or flats would be safer and more comfortable. It doesn't matter how great you look walking down that gravel driveway if you fall on your face in a gorgeous pair of heels. You would look much better in flats in that situation because they might keep you face up and on two feet.
Fashion doesn't always take comfort into consideration, but you have to keep safety in mind. If you sometimes decide to be a bit uncomfortable to wear those hot heels, at least make sure you won't be in terrain that could leave you face down in the ground. Comfort may be secondary, but safety is always primary.

In many cases, the choice between heels and flats is purely personal. You may be going somewhere that heels or flats would be acceptable for, so you have to try things on and see what you think looks the best. Go for the option that makes you look and feel glamorous and sexy. You wan to walk out the door feeling completely confident that you look like a billion bucks.
What is Expected?
In many cases, you can choose between heels and flats by thinking about the type of event you will be attending and what you expect others to be wearing. If you are going to a fancy dinner where you will be safe to wear heels, then you will look more dressed up for the occasion if you wore the heels. Alternatively, flats in this setting could look too casual and you might feel out of place with all the other well dressed women towering over you in their spiked heels.
The same goes for a casual event. If you anticipate everyone to be wearing flats because you will be out on a soggy field or some other unusual terrain, then by all means go practical and slip into the flats. This would be much better than slipping around in heels while everyone else sports their tennies.
